Riley MacGregor Greenwood
died on January 8, 2018 at his home in Valley Center, Kansas. He was 59 years old. Riley was born December 17, 1958 in Medicine Lodge, Kansas to Jack and Nancy(MacGregor) Greenwood. He was a Biology teacher at Valley Center High School since 1984. Riley grew up in Medicine Lodge, Kansas. He was a member of the Methodist Church. As a Senior in High School Riley won his class state championship in the high hurdles, just as his father had won his class in the state high hurdles. Riley met his future wife in Medicine Lodge, Diane Blurton. They were high school sweethearts. Riley was a scholarship athlete in both football and track at Hutchinson Junior College. Riley then attended the University of Kansas where he was a walk-on for the Kansas Jayhawk football team. He was a member of Kansas Chapter of Delta Chi Fraternity. After graduating from the University of Kansas with a degree in Biology, he married Diane and moved to Valley Center, Kansas, where he began his teaching career. Riley was active in the community in many ways. Growing up Riley had been a Cub Scout, Webelo and Boy Scout. As an adult he became very active in the local Boys Scouts. He was recognized for his involvement by receiving several recognitions such as 'Crew Advisor of the Year', 'Cubmaster of the Year', 'Scout Master of the Year' and 'District award of Merit'. He will always be remembered for his participation in the Mountain Man program at Trappers for the last several years. Riley received his Master in Education from Friends University. Along with teaching high school biology Riley taught anatomy at Hutchinson Junior College. In 2015 Riley was named the Valley Center Citizen of the Year. Riley was instrumental in establishing and coaching the Valley Center High School Clay Target Team as part of the Kansas State High School Clay Target League. Riley is survived by his wife Diane, who he married in 1981. Together they had a son, Riley Jack Greenwood, who attends Hutchinson Junior College. His furbabies Snoopy and Lou, his Beagles. His mother, Nancy MacGregor Greenwood, who lives in Aurora CO. And his brother, Jack Martin Greenwood, a Project Manager with CenturyLink, who lives in Aurora, CO.
A viewing will be on Thursday, January 11th, from 5:00pm-7:00pm at the Valley Center United Methodist Church, 560 N. Park Ave, Valley Center, KS.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 12, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. at the Pathways Church, 2001 N. Maize Rd, Wichita, KS. Burial will be Valley Center Memorial Cemetery, 9700 N. Meridian Ave., Valley Center, Kansas.
A scholarship fund has been established in Riley's name. This scholarship will be presented annually to a student. Gifts to this fund may be sent to Valley Center Community Foundation, Att: Riley Greenwood Scholarship, PO Box 218, Valley Center 67147. For family contributions, a fund to be administered by the family of Riley Greenwood has been established. Gifts to this fund can be sent to any Emprise Bank. Contributions can be made via phone or mail. Contributions must be made out to the Riley Greenwood Memorial Fund.
