Pastor Larry A. Tweet's Obituary
Pastor Larry Allen Tweet (86) passed away quietly at home, surrounded by his family, on May 11, 2022.
He was born in West Plains, Missouri to Melvin and Hazel (Bacon) Tweet. In his youth, Larry migrated West with his family and, in 1955, graduated from Twin Falls High School in Twin Falls, Idaho. After completing a year of seminary in Memphis, Tennessee, Larry settled in Wichita near family. In 1959 he was drafted into the Army and stationed in Germany where he worked in military intelligence, deciphering Russian code during the Cold War. With two years of active service, he received a Good Conduct Medal and an Honorable Discharge. Back in Wichita, Larry studied at Friends University and began attending church at First Assembly of God where he met Kay Stauffer. Larry and Kay married in January of 1962. Larry later graduated from Friends University with a degree in History and Secondary Education. But Larry's true calling was fulfilled in pastoral ministry, where together, he and Kay spent over 45-years loving and serving the people of Calvary Temple Assembly of God in Park City, KS. Along with pastoring, Larry was a faithful employee of Learjet, retiring from the planning department in 2005 with his 40-year pin. On his off hours, you could find him working at his many rental properties, tinkering on an old Rambler, reading a good history book, gardening, mowing the grass in his tie and wingtip shoes, making pancakes or waffles on Sunday mornings, or constructing stilts of all sizes. It was common to hear from Larry a favorite song, a poem or story, accompanied by that familiar grin and gleam in his eyes. That same gleam appeared when his children or grandchildren entered a room. Larry often talked about "taking care of the babies." He treasured his family, and with Kay, took deep pride in their growing 'tribe': 6 children, their spouses, 37 grandchildren, 12 great grands and 2 more on the way.
Larry was preceded in death by his wife, his son Thadd Tweet, his parents, and brothers Holley Stephenson and Benjamin "Benny" Tweet. He is survived by his five children, Beth (Bobby) Massey of Valley Center, KS, Nathan (Kelli) Tweet of Denver, NC, Sarah (Tony) Snavely of Wichita, KS, Ruth Wittum of Owosso, MI, Seth (Olivia) Tweet of Wichita, KS, daughter-in-law, Sharon Tweet of Liberty, MO, along with his sisters Mona Smith of Twin Falls, ID, Beth Ann (Ron) Mckean of Wichita, KS, Lareva (David) Berkshire of Willow Springs, MO, and Sharon Tweet of Eminence, MO, and brother Norman "Bobby" Tweet of Wichita, KS.
Face turned up, hand still raised like an overflowing cup, we can hear him singing those old songs, "I'm so happy and here's the reason why, Jesus took my burdens all away..."
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:00 am on June 4 at Hope Church, 2000 S. Hillside, Wichita, Ks. 67211.
