Obituary

Norma Leigh Trent (Van Orden), 90, affectionately known as "Nana", passed away peacefully on January 16, 2026, in Wichita, KS. She was born on June 24, 1935, to Floyd L and Margaret A. Van Orden (Knapp).  She attended Wichita North High School, where she met her sweetheart, Donald Edward Trent. The two were married on September 24, 1952.  They were married for 65 years. They raised four children in the Wichita and Goddard areas.  Norma was active in the church choir at both Wesley and Asbury United Methodist Churches and later attended the Mullinville, United Methodist Church.

Her hobbies included traveling with her family during their younger years, enjoying outdoor activities, camping, and boating at various State Parks and lakes.  They also loved traveling the country to visit numerous family members, including Hawaii, Florida, Oregon, and many points in between.  Norma was an accomplished seamstress, making many of her family's clothes, as well as many church banners.  After Don retired, they moved to Mullinville, KS, where they lived for many years and were very active in the Kiowa County Senior Center in Greensburg, KS.

Norma was instrumental in getting the Senior Center rebuilt after the devastating Greensburg tornado in 2007. She and Don both loved going to the center, playing games, having cookouts, and just hanging out with friends. Norma's love for her community and nature was evident through her active participation in these interests. Norma was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She cherished her family.

Norma was preceded in death by her parents and beloved spouse, Donald Trent.

She is survived by son Greg (Kathy) of Kansas City, MO, son Ray (Roberta) of Bel Aire, KS, daughter Melanie James of Wichita, son Doug (Carol) of Sedgwick, KS, 10 grandchildren - Alison Wood, Janet Trent,  Tara Ellis, Taylor Johnson, Chris James, Trent James, Tyler James, Josh McKown, Levi McKown, Lacy Shields,  and 17 great grandchildren, along with a host of friends and extended family.

A service to celebrate Norma's life will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at 11 AM at Crossings Community Church, 620 N. Fairview, Newton, KS 67114.
