Neva Dorleen
(Schlehuber) Martens
July 9, 1931 – June 16, 2025
Dorleen was born July 7th 1931 in McPherson Kansas. She was the first child of Harvey and Naomi Schlehuber. She grew up on a farm near Durham Kansas and attended Halstead College to become a registered nurse. As a nurse, she was always willing to lend a helping hand and assist with any medical needs, once a nurse always a nurse. An occupation she was proud of throughout her entire life.
Dorleen met Harvey Martens by the Ferris wheel in Hillsboro, Kansas at the Marion County Fair. They were married June 29th 1952 at the First Baptist Church of Durham. They moved to Wichita and eventually bought a home in Park City where they raised their two daughters Deby and Karen. She has 6 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. She loved her time with her grandchildren teaching them in Sunday School and watching them on the weekends. Later she enjoyed the company of her great-grands who brought a sparkle to her eye every time their names were mentioned.
Dorleen's love for Jesus and the church was evident throughout her life. She was a person who loved people. She literally could talk to a complete stranger and within 30 minutes she'd find some kind of special connection she had with them or maybe even learn they were somehow distant relatives. It was common knowledge that if she put her hand on your shoulder you couldn't leave until she was finished with her story. She had a great memory and could remember people's names and details of their lives. We enjoyed hearing about the old days and always learned something new about her younger days.
After the death of her husband Harvey, Dorleen re-invented herself. Out of the blue she became a social butterfly who went everywhere, did lots of things, and loved the senior dances. She and her daughters took many trips all over the world, Cruising the Caribbean visiting Israel, China, Alaska and many of the United States.
She was a woman of stamina. There wasn't anything that would keep her down. After two Hip replacements, a broken shoulder, broken pelvis, a shattered elbow, a broken back she put everything into her recovery and somehow would bounce back. She was referred to as the Energizer Bunny. In 2021 Dorleen, moved to the Via Christi Villages on Ridge where she found many new friends and a loving and caring staff that assisted her right up to the end.
Dorleen finished her earthly journey on June 16th 2025. She was surrounded by several of her loving family and drifted peacefully into eternity with her Lord.
Dorleen was preceded in death by her husband Harvey Martens, parents Harvey and Naomi Schlehuber, brothers Donald and Douglas Schlehuber.
She is survived by her daughters Deborah (Gary) Taylor and Karen (Charles) Case, 6 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild, sisters LaDonna Wells, and Denise (Clint) Kliewer, and many nieces and nephews.
