In Loving Memory of Nancy Jane Carroll
Nancy Jane (Payne) Carroll Born October 6, 1956 • Wichita, Kansas Passed July 2, 2026, Newton, Kansas
Today we gather to honor and celebrate the life of Nancy Jane Carroll—a woman whose warmth, humor, and unmistakable personality left a mark on everyone she met.
Nancy had what her family fondly called the gift of gab. Whether you had five minutes or five hours, she could turn a simple hello into a conversation that left you smiling, thinking, or laughing—sometimes hearing the same beloved stories more than once. Her conversations were her way of loving people, of making sure no one ever felt alone.
And then there were the socks. Nancy loved many colors, but the white socks were her signature. No matter the occasion, they were there—a quiet reminder that she was unapologetically herself.
Nancy loved her husband, James Wayne Carroll, with deep devotion and a touch of humor that made their marriage a joy to witness. Married on November 12, 1994, their 19 years together were a living example of partnership, friendship, and steadfast love.
Her faith guided her daily life. As a Christian, she delighted in giving to others—through home‑cooked meals shared on Friday afternoons at Wheatland Homes, through helping hands, and through conversations that stretched longer than anyone planned. Nancy taught us that life is richer when you share it: your stories, your laughter, your love.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Leon Jewell Payne and Darlene Marie (Keller) Payne, and by her beloved husband Jim. She is survived by her brothers Raymond (Ruth) Payne [Winfield], Charles (Shawna) Payne [Cheney], and Fred Payne [Paola], along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will carry her memory forward.
We will miss her voice, her warmth, and yes—even those white socks. But we will carry her spirit with us always.
Thank you, Nancy, for being exactly who you were. We love you, we’ll miss you, and we’ll be ready for a long chat when we see you again.
Graveside Service will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, July 10, at the Hillside Cemetery, Sedgwick, Kansas.
