Marie (Steenborg)
Clemence
July 3, 2020
Marie Madeleine (Steenborg) Clemence was born on January 17, 1928 in Denver, Arkansas to Dr. Gustav Andrew Steenborg and Eva (Donaldson) Steenborg. Marie went home to be her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, July 3, 2020. She made her profession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ in October of 1943 at the age of 15 and was baptized in Long Creek at Denver. She immediately was asked to teach a Sunday School class in the Missionary Baptist Church in Denver where she had attended since a small child. On Sunday, May 12, 1946 she married Alvin Dale Clemence in the home of their pastor in Green Forest, Arkansas. To this union were born 3 children: Sherry Dale Clemence, Stanley Richard Clemence and Sonja Gayle Clemence. Marie attended grade school in Denver, Arkansas; high school in Omaha, Arkansas and attended Ouachita Baptist College at Arkadelphia, Arkansas, with her husband who was studying to become a preacher. Dale preached in many small churches in Arkansas and Kansas. Marie accompanied him when possible and they made a good team ministering for the Lord. At different time in various churches Marie served as needed. When Dale served as a supply preacher and if Marie accompanied him, she might be asked to be a substitute Sunday School teacher which she was happy to do. In churches where she was a member she also: taught junior high to adult ladies classes, helped in the nursery, taught Vacation Bible school, lead Sunday evening classes, served as assistant to librarian and then the librarian for 4 yrs., was president of Women's Missionary Union for 4 yrs., and held other offices in W.M.S. Marie also tried her hand at working in the public. Park City had a small "post office" inside a variety store for awhile and she worked there. She worked at Bunny Land day-old bread store in north Wichita and finally at Atlantic Mills on 21 st and Amidon in the 1970s. Marie spent her later years helping elderly family members. She took turns helping her in-laws Onus and Irene Clemence, her mother Eva Zimmerman, her sister Pauline Smith and Dale her husband of 63 years when he developed dementia.
She was preceded in death by her father, mother, sister Pauline smith, brother George Steenborg and Dale her husband of 63 years. Survivors include her daughters Sherry (Jim) Arnold and Sonja Rowland, son Stan (Carol) Clemence; grandchildren, Charlene (George) Reust, Randy (Teresa) Arnold, Rachel Rowland, Meridith (Alexander) Clavel Cardoza, Chris Clemence, Jon (Jessica) Clemence; great grandchildren, Alex Arnold, Melissa Arnold, Nate Dye, Shelby Reust, Addie Clemence, Ruben Ponce, Brodie Clemence, Ellie Clemence, Alexander Clavel and Franklin Clavel.
