Irene (Fanning) Nelson, 96, passed away on Saturday, May 2, 2020. She was born in Valley Center, Kansas to Maude (Hemme) Fanning and Homer Leo Fanning. The family then moved to Wichita where she attended school and was a 1941 graduate of Wichita East High School. She was a secretary at Roosevelt Jr High School for 8 yrs and 53 yrs at Zion United Methodist Church where she retired from. Irene was a 50 yr member of National Association Letter Carriers Auxiliary where she held offices in local, state and national levels retiring as National President. A loyal WSU sports fan, she hardly ever missed the girls or boys basketball, baseball, softball or volleyball.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband Harold 'Nellie' Nelson Jr. in 1988.  She is survived by her son Phil (Jill) Nelson, daughter Phyllis (Brad) McKibbin, brother Bud Fanning, sister Barbara Maas, grandchildren Brian Nelson, Mike Nelson, Chris McKibbin & Kara McKibbin, great grandchildren Kaylie, Cameron, Salyia & Lawson, many other family, church family and friends.

Family graveside will be held at Kechi Township Cemetery, 6523 N. Hillside, Wichita, Kansas.  Her Celebration of Life is to be determined at a later time. Memorials may be designated in her memory to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, 313 S. Market, Wichita, Ks 67202.
