Obituary

Hulda E.(Reimer) Voth passed away April 20 of natural causes at the age of 95.  She is now reunited with Kenneth A. Voth, her husband of 64 years, who died in July, 2017.  She is survived by her four children, Alan Voth, Lucinda Beach, Karen Claypool (William) and Deana Voth (Paul Larson), three grandchildren, Kimberly Araujo (Ryan), Alex Beach and Ryan Beach, and two great-grandchildren, Kai and Lakey Araujo.  She is survived by her sister, Alma Koehler, and numerous sisters/brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, their spouses and children. She was also preceded in death by her three brothers, Dan, Arnold, and George Reimer.

Hulda was born and grew-up on a farm near Meade, Kansas.  Her early life was marred by turbulent events; the depression, the dust bowl, and an accident that left her mother permanently disabled with epilepsy.  In 1943, tragedy struck, as her father died of leukemia leaving her two young brothers to run the farm to provide for her mother, sister and youngest (third) brother.  After school in Meade, Hulda attended for two years and earned a degree in 1949 from the Tabor College Academy in Hillsboro, Kansas.  She attended Grace Bible Institute in Omaha, Nebraska in 1951, working her way through school as a waitress on the lunch counter at Brandeis Department Store.  From there, she taught for a short time at a Bible school in Kalispell, Montana.

In 1952, Hulda met her future husband Kenneth Voth while they were both in voluntary service at Brook Lane Farm, an in-patient mental health hospital in Maryland. They married in 1953 and had their children in the following four years.  As they moved several times to accommodate Kenneth's training as a medical technologist, she put into practice her major interest in home economics; cooking, sewing clothing for herself and the children, and managing the household budget.  To help with the family finances, as soon as the youngest child was in school, Hulda began working part time as a school cook, first east of Newton, Kansas in her children's country grade school, Pleasant Acres, then later, as the family moved and bought their first house, in the Valley Center, Kansas school system. She eventually was promoted to head cook for one of the schools, responsible for meal planning, nutrition, and food inventory management. She supervised and worked with two other cooks, serving 100+ school lunches every school day.  Later as the children moved on to college, Hulda returned to working in the mental health field as an industrial therapist at Prairie View Mental Health Center in Newton, Kansas. There she supervised patients in a work environment, upholstering seats for lawn equipment.

Hulda's major interest was in home economics and the social and educational support of her family.  Sunday school teaching, an Extension Homemaker Unit , and family camping road trips that reached from Texas to South Dakota to California were some of the regular activities.  After retirement Hulda and Ken had a robust social life through church and traveling with children and grandchildren. Throughout their working life and into retirement Hulda and Ken traveled when they could, visiting friends and relatives, going to Japan, driving around in Europe, going on cruises to the Caribbean, Panama Canal, Norway, and Alaska. In retirement they took square dance lessons and went on road trips to camp and visit with various square dance clubs in Arizona and New Mexico. Hulda and Kenneth maintained a large circle of friends through First Mennonite Church in Newton, Kansas and later Bethel College Mennonite Church in North Newton, Kansas, work, and extended family.  Unfortunately Hulda suffered a severe stroke in 2005 that put a halt to the travel, though she was always eager to hear from visitors, family and see pictures of their lives and travels.  Ken was her primary care giver until 2017 when his health began to fail rapidly, forcing them to move to an assisted living facility in Wichita.hear from visitors and family and see pictures of their lives and travels.  Ken was her primary care giver until 2017 when his health began to fail rapidly, forcing them to move to an assisted living facility in Wichita.
