Obituary

VALLEY CENTER, KANSAS

HELEN ANN (POSTON) CAREY, a loving role-model with a servant's heart, passed away October 25, 2018 at the age of 86. Helen, the daughter of Morris Brooks and Mabel Webster Poston, grew up in Rose Hill, Kansas. She participated in 4-H activities, played basketball, and was a cheerleader at Rose Hill High School, where she graduated as valedictorian. At Kansas State University, she was an active member of Clovia and earned a degree in Home Economics. Throughout her adult life, Helen was a devoted advocate for children and social justice. She put her ideals into action by working faithfully with the Democratic Women and multiple service organizations. A faithful, life-time member of the United Methodist Church, she served in numerous leadership and teaching positions in her home churches and in United Methodist Women. Helen also served in leadership roles in Church Women United and was recognized with a Human Rights Award in 2012 for her many years of service. Helen cherished the fellowship of the Christian Builders Sunday School class at Valley Center United Methodist Church and enjoyed singing soprano in the church choir. A devoted mother, she selflessly enabled her children and many others to participate in church, school, and community activities by supplying needed adult leadership and guidance for youth and children's organizations. An exceptional homemaker, cook, and hostess, Helen took pride in preparing and serving wonderful meals for family and friends. She blessed many a family member, friend, and church visitor with her culinary skills, especially her delicious and artistic cherry pies. Helen will forever be remembered by her husband of 51 years, John Paul Carey, brother Carl Poston and wife Jessie, son Richard David and wife Diane, daughter Belinda Hunt and husband Kerry, daughter Melissa Slife and husband Mike, eight grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Helen will also be missed by her numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family and dear friends. She was predeceased by her first husband, Glen Edward David, who died in 1965.
