Gwendolyn Aline (Adams) Coates, 84, of Sedgwick, KS, formerly of Junction City, KS passed away Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at Newton Medical Center, Newton, KS. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m., Saturday, February 2, at the First United Methodist Church in Junction City, KS. A private family burial will take place at Highland Cemetery in Junction City. Gwen was born July 5, 1928 in Coats, KS, the only child to Vernon Victor Adams and Carrie Belle (Brotherton) Adams. She grew up in the Elm Mills and Medicine Lodge, KS area and graduated from Medicine Lodge High School in 1946. She attended Secretarial/Business College in Wichita, KS and worked for Ben Robinson Buick where she met her late husband, Donald E. Coates. They moved to Junction City in 1960 where Gwen remained until the fall of 2010 when she moved to the Wichita Area to be near her two daughters. She was living at Sedgwick Health Care Center, Sedgwick, KS at the time of her death. Gwen was very active in the Junction City community. She was a Girl Scout Leader, and a member of the First United Methodist Church and Church Circle for over 50 years. She was involved in Garden Club, Ladies Reading Club, Little Theatre, the Gamma Phi Chapter Epsilon of Sigma Alpha Sorority, Couples Bridge, Ladies Bridge, Republican Womens Org. and Aglow. She taught Mahj Jong. She was a member the Geary Community Hospital Foundation. She was owner of the Brass Menagerie Shop. Gwen was a loving mother and grandmother and a warm, kind friend to all. She is survived by her companion, Myron "Sonny" Enns, who lives in Overland Park, KS. Her daughters, Sally (Bryce) Bidleman of Valley Center, Stacey Edwards of Maize; grandchildren, Ryan Cavin, Daniel (Katy) Cavin, Alexis Cavin, Aubrey (Breitt) Ritchey, Sydney (Justin) Brodrick, Ethan Edwards, Hannah Edwards, Gerald (Leslie) Blevins, Michael (Angie) Blevins, Pam (Mike) Houston. Great grandchildren Garrett Craft, Carson Ritchey, Matthew Ritchey, Tia Ritchey, Lakyn Brodrick, Devon Cavin, Logan Ryan and Randall Hunter Cavin, She is preceded in death by her husband Donald E. Coates; daughter Teresa Cavin; step-children Janice Blevins and Michael Coates. Memorials may be designated to the First United Methodist Church, 804 N. Jefferson, Junction City, KS 66441.
