Eugene 'Gene'
Mooney
February 24, 2019
EUGENE BRYAN MOONEY - Born on August 9, 1934 and was called home on February 24, 2019. Gene was born in Hutchinson, Kansas to Elvin B. and Gertrude M. Mooney and has 2 brothers, Boyd, Williamstown, WV and Carl (Joan) Mooney, Burnsville, MN and one sister Bernice (Gary) Bell, Mountain Home, AR. Gene was raised in Burrton, Ks and spent his early years working on cars and working with his dad in the oil fields. He married the love of his life, Marilyn F. Allen on Nov. 13, 1955 and moved to Valley Center in 1965, after beginning work for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. He retired from Southwestern Bell in 1991 after a 35-year career, which included supervising the installation of the phone systems for then Presidents Carter and Ford for their visits to Wichita. He then worked for several years at the local NAPA Auto store where his gift of gab was put to good use. Gene and Marilyn have 3 daughters, Jody Marvin (George), Maize, Marsha (Steve) Huebert and Nancy Barrier (Cody), Valley Center. They have 9 grandchildren, Sara Thomas of Gardner, Allyson Bollenbach of Maize, Jake Huebert, Wichita, Brian Haight, Valley Center, Tim Marvin, Wichita, Brett, Brad & Jenna Harris, Wichita, and Janel Barrier, Wichita. He is also survived by 14 great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law Sue Allen, St. Paul, and Jennie Brown, Pittsburg, brother-in-law, Ron Allen, Tampa, FL, as well as numerous honorary grandchildren who all considered him Grandpa. Gene leaves a long legacy of generosity, humor, lively debate sessions, a fun, loving spirit. And he could fix anything. Music was another thing he loved, and he had a beautiful singing voice, which he used to sing at various churches and weddings. He also loved his motorcycle, their camper, traveling, dogs, playing baseball as a young man, watching his daughter's and grandchildren's ballgames, spoiling his kids and grandkids, and he had a way of making each family member feel like they were his favorite and he would do anything for them. A memorial has been established with Phoenix Home Care and Hospice, 3450 N. Rock Rd, Wichita, Ks 67226, who took such good care of him, along with his friend and caregiver Kathy Tanges. A Celebration of Gene's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 1 st at Grace Connections Church, 300 N Ash, Valley Center. Condolences may be left for the family at www.bakerfhvc.com
