THORNBURG, Ellis 'Wayne', age 90, On Friday, November 20, 2015, God came for Wayne's spirit to be reunited in Heaven with his wife Hyla. Born in Springdale, Arkansas on July 24, 1925, Wayne was a former retail grocery store owner. He had lived in north Wichita since 1927. He was preceded in death by Hyla, his wife of 59 years; parents Ellis and Beulah; brother, Herschel and grandson, Kyle. Wayne is survived by his four sons, Doug and wife Robin, Greg, and Steve, all of Wichita, and Phil and wife Theresa of Parkland, Florida; as well as brother Dale, sister Wilma and 7 grandchildren, Taylor, Sydney, Eric, Matthew, Thomas, Daniel and Grace. Wayne proudly served in the US Navy during World War II as a Quartermaster aboard the USS Compton, Destroyer #705 in the South Pacific, Okinawa and Japan. Wayne loved sports, from coaching little league baseball to taking the family on vacation to major league games. He umpired fast pitch softball for many years and was a long time Kansas State fan. Wayne and Hyla enjoyed traveling the country on various bus trips and going to Branson. Wayne particularly had a love for the beach. He truly enjoyed his friends and the activities at his church.
