NEWTON, KANSAS
EDNA GLEE (HYDE) SORRELL , 91, passed away on Wednesday, December 12, 2018 in Whitewater, Kansas. She was born on March 27, 1927 at Gatewood, Missouri to Jesse Thompkins Hyde and Rosa Franklin (Henderson) Hyde. She was a graduate of Couch High School. On September 7, 1946, in Myrtle, Missouri, she married the love of her life Lehman E. 'Lee' Sorrell. They moved to Newton, Kansas in 1953 where they raised their family and were Charter Members of Meridian Baptist Church of Newton. Edna is survived by her son Larry Sorrell and his fiancee Patricia Hines; grandchildren Courtney Bruckert, Jake Sorrell, Tabitha Holder, Misty King, Caleb King and Josiah King; 5 great grandchildren; her sister Roweena Cota; and many other family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Lee, daughter Melanie King, parents Thomp and Frankie Hyde, siblings Florence Miller, Mildred Miller, Gaston Hyde, Jesse Bennett, Jay Hyde, Betty Lou Hyatt, Glenna Hastings, and Jackie Hyde. Edna worked at the Harvey House at the train Depot in Newton, at KJRG radio station and for National Trailer Convoy before starting a 32 year career in finance at Credit Thrift of America in Newton. After "retirement" she became employed at Kentucky Fried Chicken, then did books and collections at Dr. Adams dental office, and worked at the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory. She then managed the Hallmark card aisle at Walgreens before leaving the work force at age 89. Edna loved gospel music and enjoyed telling folks that she and her brother Gaston once sang on the local radio station in West Plains, Missouri with Porter Wagoner, who was a guitar playing butcher at the time. A memorial celebration will be scheduled to occur at a later date. She will be laid to rest by her husband at Greenwood Cemetery, Newton, Kansas.
