Derek G. Morris, "Marino", 59, passed away Wednesday, Aug 12, 2026 in Wichita, Kansas. He was born in San Bernardino, California to parents Bobby Jackson Morris and Virginia (Cronic) Morris. He was raised by his parents Virginia and Stewart Hammond in California then moving to Greensburg, Kansas where he attended school. After graduation he joined the Marines and was a Veteran of Desert Storm.
He loved to do woodworking. loved motorcycles (especially his Harley), music, his church, loved helping the homeless and Passage Ways that help homeless veterans. He loved all his bonus family and church family where he helped volunteer at his church.
On his birthday, Joyce asked what he wanted to do? His response was "feed the homeless". So they went and bought hotdogs, buns, chips, cookies and created sack lunches to pass out throughout the city ... this started a monthly routine, and thus created Heaven's Boots that Derek & Joyce were hands & feet for. On July 4 they got to be involved with Mission Underground for Veterans to stay military style at the Salt Mine in Hutchinson.
In his memory you may give a gift toward Heaven's Boots which may be sent to 9200 Shade Lane, Wichita, KS 67212.
Derek is survived by his wife Joyce, his fur baby support dog and a best friend Annie Lou, his children Keltonn, Kindra, Savigon; his grandkids Parker, Roman, and Gianna; his brothers Wade, Chris and sister Brenda; many nieces, nephews and a whole group of their "Frat" Kids who called him Uncle "D" or "Marino" by a host of friends, and so many they ministered to around the city and county.
They just got back February from their church mission's trip to Tanzania teaching life skills, building, devotions and a walk with Christ.
Services will be held Friday, August 28, 14:00 (2:00 p.m.) in the Kansas Veteran's Cemetery Pavilion, 1208 College St, Winfield, KS 67156. Followed by his Celebration of Life Service 16:20 (4:20 p.m.) at Pathway Church 18800 West Kellogg Dr,, Goddard, KS 67052 with Pastor David Engren officiating.
