Darrell D.
Bunch
March 13, 2021
Darrell D. Bunch, 76, was called home to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 13, 2021. Darrell was born on January 10, 1945 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Odren and Phoebe Ann Bunch. He lived on a farm in Kaw City, Oklahoma. He had a horse named Tony and a dog who was his best friend named Smokey, who saved him from getting bitten by a rattlesnake when young. His father, Odren, was killed in an accident when Darrell was 9, so they moved to Ponca City, where he was raised by his mother. He graduated from Ponca High School in 1963.
Darrell spent 6 years in the Air Force, where he worked as a Radar Technician from 1964 until 1970, and was honorably discharged at the rank of Sergeant. Darrell met and married the love of his life, Charlene Rowland, in Kirksville, MO. They moved to Wichita, Kansas in 1970.
Darrell and Charlene welcomed a daughter, Karen, in 1974 and a son, Duane, in 1978. He spent his entire life with the love of his life, who he said "loved me in spite of all my faults."
Darrell joined United Association Local 171 and became a journeyman pipefitter after a 5-year apprenticeship. Darrell worked his way to the top of his field as a Master Plumber/Master HVAC Technician/Master Electrician until an accident that almost took his life (in 2000) made it impossible to do construction or service work. He went back to college where he graduated with 2 degrees and was the Valedictorian with a 4.0 GPA. He then worked as an instructor at both a local community college and a private college, working his way up to Program Director.
Darrell served 2 terms on the City Plumbing Board, he served as an assistant Scout Master, a Baseball Coach, and served on the Board of Directors at Southwest Boys Club.
Darrell loved being around family and friends, and was known for his dry sense of humor. He was a loving husband, son, brother, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Darrell is preceded in death by his parents Odren (Phoebe) Bunch; brothers Euel Ramsey, Harold Ramsey, Eugene Bunch, and infant Bunch; sisters Nadine (Howard) Taiclet and Vivian (Barney) Burchett. He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years Charlene Bunch; daughter Karen (Ryan) Hanson; son Duane (Tina) Bunch; grandchildren Megan Bunch, Gage Blaha, Bryan (Kayla) Hanson, Autumn (Seth) Hanson, Layton Bunch, Logan Bunch, Ashton Hanson; great-grandchildren Denver Hanson and Sky Stewart.
Graveside service will be held at Kansas Veteran's Cemetery, 1208 N. College, Winfield, Kansas at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 24, 2021.
