May 15, 2018
AUGUSTA, KANSAS
BILL STOVALL , 92, beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away on Tuesday, May 15, 2018. Bill was born to Blucher and Erma (Cash) Stovall on October 30, 1925, on a farm east of Peabody, KS. He attended Peabody public schools and graduated from high school in 1943. In July of 1944, Bill became engaged to Mildred Schambron. He enlisted in the Army in August of 1944. Bill and Mildred were married on December 28, 1944, while he was on furlough. Bill was placed on the front lines in France on February 1, 1945, as a machine gunner. On March 21, he was severely wounded and finally arrived at Fitzsimmons General in Denver, CO. in June. After recovering, he was assigned to a recruiting station in Oklahoma City, where Mildred was able to join him. Bill was honorably discharged on June 22, 1946. Bill and Mildred moved to Wichita, where they made their home and Bill started his career with the US Postal Service. He spent 33 years with them, mostly as a supervisor, until he retired in 1980. Bill and Mildred have two children, a son, W.J. and a daughter, Susan. In 1967, they moved to a small acreage outside of Goddard, KS. Bill's dream of owning a farm came true when they purchased land outside of Augusta, KS. and moved into a new home in 1977. While on the farm, Bill raised registered quarter horses and then started raising cattle. Throughout the years, he was a member of Albert Pike Blue Lodge, Consistory, Shrine, Disabled American Vets, American Legion, and attended and faithfully volunteered for the Methodist Church. Bill could best be described by the song titled "Humble and Kind" by Tim McGraw. The family finds comfort in knowing that Bill is finally united forever with his wife, Mildred, just as they had always wanted. Bill is proceeded in death by his wife of 66 years, Mildred Stovall; his parents, Blucher and Erma Stovall; brother Robert Stovall; and sister, Shirley Hadley. He is survived by son, W.J. Stovall; daughter, Susan Hughes and husband Rob; grandson, Cody Hughes; great-granddaughter, Isla Hughes; and brother, Jack Stovall. He is also survived by other relatives and friends. Graveside services, with military honors, will be at 11:00 a.m., on Monday May 21, 2018, at Prairie Lawn Cemetery, Peabody, KS. In lieu of flowers, you may send a memorial in Bill's name to one of your choice. Condolences may be left for the family at www.bakerfhvc.com
