BONITA 'BONNIE' (BARNES) BYERLY

VALLEY CENTER, KS Byerly, Bonita M. (Barnes), 91, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend passed away Friday, November 8, 2013. She was born on August 4, 1922 in Benedict, Kansas, the daughter of Troy and Pearl (Fyfe) Barnes. A longtime resident of Valley Center and a retired Halstead Hospital employee, she was also an active and faithful Christian since 1947. Bonnie was a tireless worker in the churches she attended. She always sang in the choir, and in earlier years was often called on as soloist both at worship services and at funerals. In her later years, she particularly enjoyed working with the children in “Mission Friends” and Children’s Church. Two years ago, Bonnie joined the First United Methodist Church, most likely as an accommodation to her daughter. She continued to tell friends and pastors alike that “I’m a Methodist now, but I’ll always be a Baptist in my heart.” Preceding her in death is her oldest daughter, Judith Anne Byerly Drake (1960) and her husband, Cal Byerly (1989). Bonnie is survived by her daughter Cheryl Nordstedt, Valley Center; her sister, Nelda Barnes, Douglasville, GA; her brother Melburn “Bud” Barnes, Fredonia; nieces Lori Bearden and Lindy Schmidt; nephews Mel Barnes and Greg Bradt; four granddaughters, six great grandchildren and one great-great grandson. Bonnie had a very special relationship with her granddaughters, three of whom lived with her and Cal for a number of years during their childhood and to whom she was both mother and grandmother. The granddaughters who grieve her passing are Linda Barker (Troy), Rosalia, Ks, Terilee Nordstedt (Randy), Skokie, IL, Carrie Norden (Gary), Apopka, FL and Kellie Norden-Dean (Kim), Apopka, FL. Her great-grandchildren include Josh (Kate) and Logan (Amy) Barker, Calvin and Alivia Norden, Samantha and Shelby Nordstedt. Bonnie’s great-great-grandson, Aiden Dirk Baker is 2 ½ weeks old. Unfortunately Bonnie’s illness prevented her from meeting this newest addition to her family. Visitation 5-7 p.m., Monday, November 11 at Baker Funeral Home, 100 S. Cedar, Valley Center. Services are 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 12, at First United Methodist Church, 560 N. Park, Valley Center, Ks. Graveside following the service at Fredonia City Cemetery, Fredonia, Kansas. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established with GraceMed Health Clinic of Wichita. Condolences may be left for the family at www.bakerfhvc.com
